1:15pm – 2:45pm – ENGAGING POPULAR MUSIC: Learning to be the valued guide for the younger generation as they engage with culture.
As young adults take on more leadership in church and school communities. opportunities will arise for meaningful moments of cultural discernment teaching. But we may struggle to understand what songs their students are consuming. Artists like Lil Mosey, Lil Barnacle, Ava Max, and Tones And Iare popular with youth but less known to adults. Without personal discernment skills, both youth and young adults will be unaware of how this music impacts their faith and identity. This workshop will equip participants with discernment skills they can use daily, and show participants how they can be the valued guides youth need in order to thrive.
3pm – 4:30pm – THE MIRROR OF POPULAR MUSIC: Using popular music to engage in meaningful conversations
#Metoo. Black Lives Matter. Mental Health. Indigenous Reconciliation. Our communities are encountering many challenging conversations in popular culture. Bringing these topics into conversations helps our community make sense of the world around us and our place within it. Popular Music can be a catalyst to these conversations by providing a piece of art that can be experience dtogether. Participants will explore how to use popular music in the communities and learn the unique questions/challenges that could arise. Participants will walk away with songs, tools, and techniques to bring back to their personal context.
